Despair
I tried several different things in the piece. The most important was trying to establish a mood. Despair is a feeling of hopelessness, of losing everything and, potentially, everyone. It can leave you feeling ragged and desperate, helpless. So the important things was establishing lighting, color, and texture.
I didn’t want to use a lot of light, but I have to wonder if I used to little light. I wanted the main focus to be the back of the character and her pose to represent a sense of frustration. The colors chosen is a mix of blues and greys. Color theory suggests that blue (dependant on shade) can represent depression, sadness. Mix this with grey, and I hope I pulled off the sense of despair and hopelessness. Adding a grainy texture with the faded background was to enhance the sense of a gritty, lonely truth.
I don’t think I’ve ever actually tried to fully explain my work/thought process. I know for some people, it can help a lot in trying to understand a piece, maybe even learn something to apply it to their own work.
