April is National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry month where you pretty much raise awareness and appreciation for poetry. This is for the United States and for Canada and was started by the Academy of American Poets. In the UK, poetry month occurs in October.
As a way to recognize it as such, I want to concentrate more on poetry, from recognizing some of my favorite authors to writing new pieces with experimental forms.
Some of my favorite authors include D.H. Lawrence, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe. I also enjoy reading works by those that haven’t made a name for themselves but still possess a sense of raw energy. This is from browsing places like Writing.com and Writer’s Cafe.
I also prefer free form writing, which reminds me of abstract painting, but with words. Rhyming is a talent I’ve never been able to develop. Other styles of poetry that I enjoy is off beat, contemporary work. I like reading poetry with a “punch line” that makes you go, “What?” and then read it again. Skip flowery language and redundant cliches, give me emotionally moody and make me think poetry. Show me a story, don’t tell me.
“Habitation” by Margaret Atwood
Marriage is not
a house or even a tent
it is before that, and colder:
The edge of the forest, the edge
of the desert
at the back where we squat
outside, eating popcorn
where painfully and with wonder
at having survived even
this far
we are learning to make fire
